Common questions

Is Lyunotes free?

Yes, you can use it for free. On Windows the app is free, including syncing through your own cloud storage. On iPhone, cloud sync and certain other features are unlocked with Glyph, a one-time purchase (not a subscription). The price is shown in the App Store.

Do I need an account?

No account is required. On iPhone, an optional account is used only to unlock Glyph. See the Privacy Policy.

Which platforms does Lyunotes run on?

Windows and iPhone. Mac and Android are in development.

Which cloud services work with Lyunotes?

Currently Dropbox, OneDrive and iCloud. Your notes stay on your device or in your own cloud storage, and today Lyunotes runs no server that holds a copy of them. See Encrypted notes in your own cloud.

Can Lyunotes read my notes?

Not in an encrypted notebook. Encryption happens on your device with a key that comes from your password, and we hold neither. You can check this yourself in the files your cloud holds: Check it yourself.

Is everything encrypted?

No. Encryption is optional and per notebook. Turn it on for the notebooks you want sealed and leave the others as ordinary notebooks. A notebook without encryption is stored as plain text.

What if I forget my password?

Use your recovery key, which the app shows once when you turn on encryption. If you lose both your password and your recovery key, nobody can open the notebook, including us. See Your password and recovery key.

Can I bring my notes from Evernote, UpNote or OneNote?

Yes. Lyunotes imports Evernote (.enex) exports, folders exported from UpNote or OneNote, and Markdown, HTML and plain text files, and it can export notes to Markdown whenever you want. See Move your notes to Lyunotes.

Is Lyunotes open source? Has it been audited?

No to both. Lyunotes is closed-source and has not had an independent third-party security audit. That is why we publish ways to check things yourself: Check it yourself and What Lyunotes doesn't do.

What are themes?

A theme decides how a notebook looks and works. You choose one per notebook and can change it at any time. Today there are two: Default, the classic notes layout, and Diary, a journal with a quick-post composer and a calendar. See Themes.

How do I open the files in a note's Resources?

Even in an encrypted notebook, each note's Resources (the files that belong to the note) stay encrypted; open them in Lyunotes, or on Windows mount them as a virtual drive and open and edit them in other apps. In an unencrypted notebook, they are ordinary files on disk that you can open in File Explorer or Finder.

Can I use Lyunotes on several devices?

Yes, through your own cloud: your iPhone and your Windows PC can open the same vault. Let sync finish before you switch devices. Lyunotes has safeguards that reduce the risk to your notes, but because we don't control your cloud's servers, we can't prevent every case: two devices changing the same notebook at the same moment can still conflict. See What Lyunotes doesn't do.

What does Lyunotes collect?

On Windows: no account and no analytics; the only connection to our servers is an update check that fetches a small file from lyunotes.com. On iPhone: what the optional Glyph license needs, plus an update check. Details are in the Privacy Policy and in Check 2.
